Week 18 Outline
More Joy
Ps 4:7 You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound.
We can find more joy than we could ever imagine when we understand:
The Pursuit of Joy their grain and wine
Most of us seek to find joy in sustenance (grain) and stimuli (wine). We go after the wrong things to find joy, things that are situational rather than substantial.
The Problem of Joy when . . . abound
We encounter a problem when the things that we pursue only give us temporary joy. When they no longer “abound” our joy diminishes and we need to seek more stuff and stimuli to “get back’ our joy. Lasting Joy can't happen from things that don't last.
The Provider of Joy You have put
The Lord gives us Joy. Jesus said, there is a way for your joy to be full in Him (John 15:11, 16:24). The Bible affirms that your joy can be complete in Him (1 John 1:4). He is the source of our full and complete Joy regardless of the situation.
The Place of Joy in my heart
Joy must reside in our heart. It must not reside in our mind where our thoughts can betray our joy. It must not be dictated by our feelings or our emotions as they will discount our joy. Joy must be heartfelt and unshaken by our fleeting thoughts or our vacillating feelings.
The Persistence of Joy more joy . . . . than they have
The Bible says joy is a fruit of God’s Spirit (Gal 5:22). The Joy of the Lord is internal. It is eternal joy. It lasts. Followers of Jesus have more joy than those who rely on external sources for their joy, because their joy is not contingent on any outside stimuli or situation. Believer’s never loose this God given joy. It proves a solid and secure refuge in any of life’s storms. Our joy is intact and untouchable throughout our deepest darkest days because it is not based on what we have or what we do, but on who has given it. Our joy abounds even when the grain and wine doesn’t, because our God abounds even if the grain and wine doesn’t.
