The 365 Journey
Outline Week 28
Psalm 106:23
Therefore he said he would destroy them-- had not Moses, his chosen one, stood in the breach before him, to turn away his wrath from destroying them.
When we fall or fail we have a "chosen one" in Jesus who will stand "in the breach" on our behalf.
Our text identifies 4 things that will help us understand the necessity of Christ standing "in the breach" for us. They are
The Incident -Therefore he said he would destroy them
Ps 106:6 Both we and our fathers have sinned: we have committed iniquity, we have done wickedness. v. 19-20 They made a calf in Horob and worshiped a metal image, the exchanged the glory of God for and image of an ox that eats grass. They forgot God their Savior. The actual event is recorded in Exodus 32:1-9.
The Indictment . . . his wrath Their wickedness incurred God's wrath. In Exodus 32:8-10 God says, 8 And the LORD said to Moses, "Go down, for your people, . . . have turned aside quickly out of the way that I commanded them. . . . 10 Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them, in order that I may make a great nation of you."
The Intermediary . . . Moses, his chosen one God chose Moses to lead the people (Ex 4) and to be the mediator between God and his people. (Ex 33:11)
The Intervention had not Moses, . . . stood in the breach before him, to turn away his wrath
In Exodus 32:11-12 Moses prays for God to relent of His wrath, "But Moses implored the LORD his God and said, "O LORD, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, whom you have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? Why should the Egyptians say, 'With evil intent did he bring them out, to kill them in the mountains and to consume them from the face of the earth'? Turn from your burning anger and relent from this disaster against your people.
The Lord hears his prayer and turns from His wrath "And the LORD relented from the disaster that he had spoken of bringing on his people." Ex 32:14
On the cross Jesus prayed "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34). Jesus, our mediator, pleaded for the forgiveness of all those who had turned against Him and for us as well, as he stood "in the breach" to take the full measure of God's wrath for our sin upon Himself. We are not destroyed because Jesus delivered us by His death on the cross. God's wrath is "turned away" from us and placed on Jesus, when we trust in Christ, "his chosen one".
