Today's Bible Reading: JEREMIAH 31:15-40, 49:34-51:14
Jeremiah 31:34
. . . For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”
Most of us have long memories. We don’t easily forget things that happen to us. We particularly remember when someone misrepresents us, mistreats us or misspeaks about us or someone we love. We don’t easily forget these kinds of incidents or interactions. We might forgive, but we may never forget.
But the Lord is not like us. He forgives and forgets. He doesn’t hold on to our sins like we might. He doesn’t display them to us every time we tumble into another transgression. No, they don’t linger in His mind or thoughts. Our sins don’t remain in the archives of heaven to be resourced when we continually rebel. They are forgiven and forgotten the moment we confess and forsake them. There is no record of confessed sin stored in glory. They are gone, forever forgiven and forgotten never to be mentioned or accessed again.
This is the new covenant relationship that we have in Christ. When we turn to and trusted Christ our lengthy ledger of iniquities was imputed upon Him. His death on our behalf removed the record of our sins. As Paul says, “And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. (Col 2:13-14). By the once for all sacrifice of His son, our sins were forgiven and forgotten. Now when the Lord looks upon us, He doesn’t see the massive account of our sins, but the marvelous action of our Savior. He sees Jesus and not our sin. In Him our sins are forgiven and forgotten
Today thank the Lord that He forgives our iniquity, and remembers our sin no more. Ask Him to help you see your Savior rather then you sin. Ask Him to help you forgive and forget those who have “sinned” against you. Ask Him to help you forgive and forget your own sins, trusting that in Christ that they have been forgiven and forgotten.
