The 365 Journey

Outline Week 39

Luke 5:5

And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.”

In a world where our toil often brings trouble, we need to accept and act on God's word to thrive. The account of Simon and the empty nets gives us several insights into how to trust His word in hard times. They are:

The Conundrum of a Disciple

And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing!

Good fishermen catch fish. Simon and company excelled as fishermen. Fishing was their livelihood and they did it well. But, like all of us, some days, or nights as in this case, are better then others. It's not a good day when seasoned fisherman return to shore with empty nets. Their toil profited them nothing. Like them, there are times that our "toil" brings more trouble than triumph. Our adulting shows no sign of adult behavior. Our parenting leads to more pain than progress. Our business goes bust. Spiritually we are spent. Our journey has become jilted. All our efforts only lead to "empty nets". We feel like Simon on the shore.

The Confidence of a Disciple

But at your word

There is something significant about scripture in these moments. It is in the words of our Lord that we can find consolation, counsel and confidence to continue. Although struggling, we can find our strength in scripture. Our confidence in crisis must be in what He says. We must position ourselves to regularly hear from the Lord. We must be in earshot of the eternal. Daily time in God's word is an essential element for a "hearing"disciple. Weekly times with God's people helps to bring God's word to light. Simon was in the presence of the Savior so he could hear Him, we need to be too.

The Commitment of a Disciple

I will let down the nets.

Most often the hardest part of a life of faith is acting on what God says. Peter acted on the words of Jesus. It is not just hearing the words of Jesus, but heeding His word wherein we find our help. Even though often we don't understand what God is trying do in us and for us we have to trust what He says. He sees what we cannot. Peter so trusted the words of Jesus that by faith he acted upon them, so should we. So go ahead, let down your nets.
