With Good

Today's Bible Reading: 2 SAMUEL 15:1-17:14

2 Samuel 16:12

“It may be that the LORD will look on the wrong done to me, and that the LORD will repay me with good for his cursing today.”

People will talk, yet the Lord sees and hears them. Their word is not final, His is. What truly is evil against you today, the Lord can turn to good tomorrow.

David was escaping Jerusalem. His son Absolom had “stolen the hearts of the people” away from him. He now had declared himself King. For fear of his life and for the safety of his family, David flees from his son.

In route he passes through a city where a man from the family of Saul encounters him. He didn’t give David a warm welcome; rather he began to curse him “continually”. He said horrible and hateful things about David. He threw stones at him and kicked up dust in his path.

David’s trusted aid Abishai asked permission of the king to silence him for his insolence by removing his head. David’s response was not what was expected. He said to let him alone.

David surmised that if he is cursing him because God has compelled him to say what he said, so they shouldn’t ask “why” this was happening. If it was in God’s plan and purpose, they were not to fight against it.

The man continued his rant from the hillside for quit some distance, continually cursing them along their way. Yet in the midst of all this hate-filled rhetoric, David saw a glimmer of hope. Hope was at hand. He affirmed that perhaps the Lord would look down upon this evil vicious verbal onslaught and weave good from it. David surmised that somehow the Lord would right the wrong done to him. He did. A short time later, Absolom died, the rebellion stopped and David's kingdom was restored.

Today don’t be discouraged by the evil hateful things that others will or have said about you. Instead, be reminded of David’s response to hurtful rantings. He could have retaliated by silencing the slander and beheading the harassment. Instead, his confidence was in his God. His hope was in the help the Lord would provide. This must be our hope and help too. Trust Him today to work right from the wrong.
