Steps to Memorizing Scripture

Step One

Obtain (or cut) a set of blank index cards,

2 3/4 inches by 1 3/4 inches, so they will fit into a scripture memory packet.* You can use regular larger index cards if that works better for you.

Step Two

Find a verse that you want to memorize from a sermon, podcast, or your personal Bible reading. Choose one that is meaningful to you so that you will want to memorize it. My suggested verses.

Step Three

Write the reference to the verse on the top left corner of the card. Then, write the verse on the card. Try to fit the whole verse on only one side of the card. If it doesn’t fit, split the verse up to use two cards.

Step Four

Began memorizing the verse as follows.

A) Read the reference to the verse out loud 2 to 3 times, then recited it without looking at at least 2 to 3 times.

B) Read the verse out loud 2 to 3 times focusing on the order of the words and natural breaks in the verse. Then turn the card over and recite it from memory 2 to 3 times. If you’re unable to recite the verse “word for word” turn the card over and glacé at the words or the order of the words that you missed. Possibly read the verse out loud again, focusing on the words you missed. Continue attempts to recite the verse from memory until you can recite it at least three times “word for word.”

Step Five

Once a day for a week attempt to recite the reference and the verse “word for word.”

Say the reference first, then the verse, then repeat the reference again. Do this three times each day. If you cannot remember a word or order of the words in the verse, then read the reference or the verse and try again until you can recite it “word for word”, three times in a row.

Step Six

After the first week, review the verse from the previous week. Try to recite it “word for word” at least one time. If you can’t, look at the words or order of the words you missed and try it again until you can recite it as written. After you have done that, then proceed to attempt to recite the verse for the current week.

Step Seven

As you add new verses, follow the process steps 1-4. Make sure you can recite all of the verses from the previous weeks before you begin reciting the verse for the current week.

May the Lord bless you as you seek to become "mindful" of His word.

The Bible Memory App is also a very useful tool to help you memorize scriptures

*You can also purchase pre-written memory cards and a packet, but I have found that I am more likely to memorize a verse that I have chosen and written on a card in my own handwriting.
