Our King

Today’s Bible Reading: ZECHARIAH 9:1-14:21

Zechariah 9:9

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

The coming king gives reason to rejoice. The Israelites had lived under oppression for many years. They were ruled by many kings not of their choosing. Mostly of them were tyrants who mistreated and abused them. Their hope was for deliverance. They longed for freedom from their tyrannical rule. They looked for salvation from their slavery. Now they are told of a coming king. Their Redeemer, this righteous king, this, saving king, He was their hope. He was the reason to rejoice. His coming brought enthusiastic expressions. It brought forth shouting aloud with joy.

Deliverance was at hand. Their redemption had risen. Salvation had come. The king was coming. This was not just any king, but their king. He was coming for them. This king was revealed years later. He is Jesus the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. He would enter into Jerusalem riding a donkey. Amid shouts of hosanna and waving palm fronds, He came. Prophecy had now been fulfillment.

The king has come. He connected with us by becoming one of us. He came. Sinless in nature, He came. Righteous in all things, He came. Lowly and humble in his character, He came. He came to conquer and to deliver us. He appeared to free us from sin and Satan. He came to save us. He came to lay down His life for ours. He came to redeem us. He purchased our pardon on the cross. He came to rise. He gave us hope of life eternal. He came to rule. He ascended into the throne of heaven to reign forever. Your king has come. He will come again.

But many refuse to recognize Him as king. They will not submit to His rule. They are unwilling to surrender to his reign. Yet His kingship is not based on earthly recognition, but heavenly. His authority is from above. Prophets proclaimed it. The magi affirmed it. Pilate professed it. His followers acknowledge it. He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. One day all the earth will declare it bowing before him as King. Oh hurry the day.

Today rejoice in King Jesus. Ask the Lord to help you continue to submit to and serve Jesus your King. Pray for those that don’t acknowledge Him as their king. Pray that the blindness of their eyes will be removed and the hardness of their hearts will be softened to crown Jesus as their King.
