Today's Bible Reading: NEHEMIAH 7:4-8:12
Nehemiah 8:8
They read from the book, from the Law of God, clearly, and they gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading.
One of the spiritual difficulties we face is deciphering God’s word. It seems hard for many of us to understanding what scripture is saying. We read it or we listen to it, but nothing. We can’t make sense of what it is saying. We struggle to get something from what we read. It’s all Greek to us.
Well, we are not alone. Apparently, the Israelites struggle too. They didn’t get it. They needed help to unravel what was being read. They need help decoding it to unfold its truth. So, the Lord provided help from saints schooled in scripture. He appointed those who could come along side to explain it. He arranged for ones who could “give the sense” or make sense of scripture. These were those who could render insight and understanding to what was being read. They gave clarity to what was cloudy. When the people understood God’s word, they wept and worshiped. Wept because of what it said of them. Worshiped because of what it said of Him.
God wants us to know His word. He desires for us to gain its insight. He is delighted when we can unfold its wisdom and peal back its mystery. In doing this we can know Him, embrace Him, and find joy in Him.
His desire is that we would delight in His word. So, He brings us help to comprehend the complex. Like the Israelites, He appoints teaches, those learned saints to instruct us. He gathers wise ones who can help us make sense of scripture. He brings us in touch with those who can help us understand. We can look to them to assist in acquiring Biblical knowledge. We can utilize them to aid in rightly dividing the word of God.
But He has not only given us saints, but His Holy Spirit. The author of the book is accessible to us. The writer walks with us. He illuminates. He instructions. He will guide us into its truth. He will unravel its mystery. He clarifies the complicated, He clears the confusion and He makes it make sense.
Understanding the scripture is not unattainable. We have help along the way, by His saints and through His Spirit. So, read the scripture, reflect on the saints, and rely on the Spirit. Knowledge will grow, understanding will unfold, and wisdom will emerge. The senseless will make sense, and you will understand God’s word.
Today thank the Lord for those Godly saints that He has brought alongside you to help you better understanding scripture. Ask Him to enable His Holy Spirit to illuminate the ink on the pages of His Word that you might make sense of the scriptures.
