Help Comes

My Help

Psalm 121: 1-2

1 I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? 2 My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

The Christian life is not a straight smooth path, it is Riddled with steep climbs, rugged terrain, and dangers lurking along the trail. It is anything but easy. We cannot make the rugged assent and descend the dark valleys along the way without help to enable us to withstand all that we encounter. Fortunately, our help comes from the Lord. Each year the Israelites would traveled to Jerusalem to participate in feast and festivals. Jerusalem is surrounded by several mountains and to get there the pilgrims had to traverse the jagged inclines and avoid the thieves along their path. Peril was everywhere along the way. The Psalmist anticipates the danger he will face as he lifts up his "eyes to the hills". He considers the peril that lies ahead and poses a question, "from where does my help come?" In his feebleness he wonders how he will survive the journey. He concludes that he doesn’t have the ability to survive the journey apart from help along the way. He knows he doesn’t have the spiritual strength to make the journey. He admits the need for help for His perilous situation. We too, must admit our help in our spiritual walk. We cannot do this on our own, that is why we need the Lord to be our strength and support along the way. The Psalmist concludes, like we must, that our “help comes from the Lord". It is Him that we must trust on the trail. It is Him we must turn to in our trouble. The writer gives us two things that we can affirm about our supernatural helper. First, this helper is personal. Notice that the text reads "my help". Is our personal relationship with the Lord that launches His help. He knows our frailty and our failures. He knows that we need strength and support. It is good to know that the Lord who made all things knows us and knows how to help us. The second thing that we can affirm is His help is powerful. Notice the phrase “maker of heaven and earth.” His power made the mountain that stands before us, and the path that we are walking upon. Our confidence is not in our ability but in the capability of the creator of the universe. We can trust the one who created the mountain to carry us over the mountain. The one who upholds creation can and will hold us up along our way. All of His creation is at His disposal to dispense in our time of distress. We need not fear the steep climbs and the dangers that lie on the path ahead when the one who put the path there journeys with us. The maker of the mountain will make away for us over “this” mountain!

Thank God that He created the heavens and the earth. Praise Him the He will move heaven and earth to help us in our struggles. Ask Him to help you to trust Him to come to your aid in your anguish. Ask Him to enable you to have confidence in Him and His power to overcome whatever lies before you. Thank Him that your help "comes"
