Handling the Hard

Handling the Hard

Gen 18:14

Is anything too hard for the Lord?

Life can be filled with hardships, insurmountable mountains, inescapable difficulties and impassible obstacles. A life-threatening disease, a financial crisis, a broken relationship and shattered goals can devastate and debilitate us. They can cancel our resolve. They can fracture our faith, sending us into a spiral of despair and depression. We seek a way to cope. We search for help for our hard times. We find it in the one for whom nothing is too hard or too difficult.

Abraham and Sarah were hard pressed. Their hopes for a child together had crept way. Now in their old age they saw no way for their desires to be fulfilled. Sarah being well beyond the age of childbearing, their dreams were dashed. God had promised that Sarah would bear a child. That together they would produce an heir. But now, this seemed impossible. The odds were stacked against them. They saw no way that God’s promise could come to fruition, that His plan could be accomplished. So, they settled in, seeking to make the best of their situation. Disillusioned they continued on, unsure how the Lord could handle the hard. How He could help them. How He would make good on his promise. But what is improbable for us is possible for Him.

In their difficultly, the Lord intervened. He came to them. He spoke to them. He reiterated His intentions. He reaffirmed His promise, handing out hope. Sarah would have a child. They would be blessed with a baby, an heir. Yet doubt ensued. Disbelief was dredged up. Sarah could not image the impossible. She could not conceive of her conception. Yet God keeps His promises. Nothing He has promised is too hard for Him to accomplish. He is a promise keeping God. Sarah’s inability (infertility) doesn’t limit God’s intention. His purpose will prevail. There is nothing too hard for Him? He handles the hard.

What a great word from His word. Our hardships can be handed to Him. Our difficulty delivered into His divine hands. Our hope is in Him. Our help is from Him. It is to Him we must turn. It is in Him we must trust. He is our hope in hard times. There is nothing too hard for Him. He handles the hard.

Today it is probable that the hard will come. There will be situations you can’t handle. There will be obstacles you can’t overcome. When they arise, meditate on this text. Consider Him who gave a son to senior adults. Who made the hard happen? Believe that He can help you. Recall His promises for your predicament. Interject them into your impossible. Put your hope in one for whom nothing is too hard. Let Him handle your hard.
