Today's Bible Reading
Drift Away
Hebrews 2:1
Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.
Many people who abandon their faith progressively slip away. They slowly drift away rather then suddenly drop out. They allow little compromises into their lives. They allow minor movements away from their convictions. Their Bible reading wanes. They permit prayer to subside. Their involvement in ministry fades. Their church attendance tapers off. Their desire for and dedication to Christ diminishes. Their pursuit and passion for the things of God dwindles. They become complacent. Eventually they drift away. They evolve into closet Christians at best.
Knowing this possibility, our text expresses concern. It gives us a warning, a caution that we need to heed. We must watch. We must look for signs of drifting. We must be aware of markers that will indicate that we are moving away from our faith. We must recognize obstacles in our path. We must avoid detours in our direction. You must be careful to not become dissatisfied with your faith. You must be aware of declines in our daily devotions. You need to watch for the signs of shifts.
Our texts tell us we should be proactive in order to avoid drifting away. We are encouraged to "pay much closer attention to what we have heard." Our faith is established when we enter into a relationship with Christ. It is enhanced when we hear what God says to us in His word and through what we hear from His followers.
Our text also encourages us to be attentive to what we are taught. We must not lose what we have listened to. Drifting occurs when we dismiss or disregard what we have heard. We must let what we have heard be ever fresh in our mind and thoughts. We can’t let them slip away or we might slip away.
Today dwell on the things that you “have heard”. Look over them again and again so they can take root in your heart and soul. Look out for any sign that you are “drifting away” from what has been planted within you. Ask the Lord to help you not drift away.
