Do Good

December 21st

Today's Bible Reading

Do Good

Hebrews 13:16

Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.

What a great affirmation. This season is a time of considering others. Doing good and sharing gifts with friends and family. A time of reflecting, remembering and responding to the goodness of God which He has poured out upon us. It is a time to celebrate God’s greatest gift of His son. To rejoice in the babe in Bethlehem who is Immanuel, God with us. God poured out His goodness on us in the coming of Christ. He shared with us the gift of His son.

We do good because God is good and has been good toward us. We share because He shared with us. We bless others because of His blessings that we have graciously received. Every day we should consider the good that we can do. We must contemplate how we can share with others. This time of year, giving is most prevalent on our mind. In a world of consumerism and greed, we must pause and determine how we can do good. We must ask how we can share what the Lord has given us with others. We may not have abundant resources, but we can give our time and talent to help others.

We are told that as we make personal sacrifices to do good and give to others, we please God. When we don’t hold back what we have, but hand it to others, God is pleased. These simple but significant acts declare God’s character. We reflect His goodness and giving nature when we do good and give to others. In this we demonstrate we are His disciples. We show we are like Him. That’s probably why He is pleased because those who claim to be His carry on like Him.

So do good. Give what you can. Please God.

Today as you dwell on what gift to give a friend or family member for Christmas, stop for a moment and remember God’s goodness toward you and the greatest of all gifts, the gift of Jesus. Don’t let yourself be so saturated with the season that you miss its significance. Don’t miss the moment to magnify Christ at Christmas by doing good and giving to others.
