Blessable

Psalm 1

Blessed is the man who . . .

We all want to be blessed. We want to experience the blessing of God upon our life. We want the joy and gladness that flows from His blessings. We want to be blessed. But to be blessed you must be blessable as our text says, Blessed is the man who . . . “

Our text gives us insight into the traits of a “blessed” or happy believer. First, it gives those things that we are to avoid and then it lays out those things that we are to adhere to. God’s desire is for us is to receive His blessings but to do so we must live a blessable life. In following the principles He outlines, we will be happy and holy in the Lord. We will be the blessable man.

First, we are instructed what to avoid to be blessable. The blessable man lets go of sin. He notices it and takes great pains to make sure it is not welcome or received in His life. He does this by not walking with those who walk in sin, by not standing with those who stand for sin, and not sitting with those who are seated in the place of sin. He recognizes and removes sin from His life. The blessable man lets go of sin.

Second, we find in this Psalm several things that we are to adhere to in order to be blessable. First, We must learn God’s word. Notice the text says, “But his delight is in the law of the Lord and in His law he meditates day and night.” The man who would be blessable, must make God’s word a priority. He must find delight in what it says and dive deep into its message and meaning. It must be so important to him that he invests time into memorizing it and mulling over it day and night. He is someone who dwells on God’s word through daily meditation. The blessable man loves and learns God’s word.

Another trait of the blessable man is that he lives according to God’s way. Knowing the word and living the word are two distinct things. We can’t simply investigate and implant God’s words in our mind without implementing them in the way we live our lives. Notice the next portion of the text. It says, “He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither.” The blessable one firmly plants himself by the waters that will cause him to grow. He is not just knowledgeable but fruitful. He lives out His faith bearing fruit in its season. A blessable believer bears fruit by living out the truths he is taught. Jesus said, “Abide in me and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine neither can, unless you abide in me.” (John 15:4). Jesus also said, “By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.” (John 15:8). You are blessable if you bear fruit and thus prove to be His disciple. Don’t expect to be bless by God if your life is not blessable. Don’t live a life of withered leaves.

The Lord affirms that those who delight in His word and diligently live out His word are those that are blessable. They are the happy Christians. They are the ones who will have joy in the Lord. They are the ones who will prosper in all that they do. Like Joseph of old, “The Lord was with him and . . . the Lord made all he did to prosper in his hand” (Gen 39:3). So put His word before you and plant yourself by the streams of water so that you might receive the blessing of the Lord. Be blessable and you will be blessed.

Today thank the Lord for His blessing. Ask him to help you to avoid the place of sin in your life. Ask Him to help you to delight in His word. Ask Him to help you plant yourself next to His streams that you might grow and bear fruit in you spiritual walk. Ask God to make you blessable that He might bless you.
