Revealed

Today’s Bible Reading: DEUTERONOMY 29:2-31:29

Deuteronomy 29:29

The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.

In our spiritual quest we often get stuck on what has not been made known rather than study what has been manifest. We search for spiritual secrets instead of being satisfied with the scripture. We seek the unknown. We hunt for hidden mystical mysteries. We are dissatisfied with what has been disclosed. We want a “fresh word”. We want a new revelation. We want “present” prophecies instead of past proclamations.

In the text the Lord attested that we have all that we need for spiritual growth. His present revelation is adequate. There is no need for new proclamations. His scripture will suffice for everything we encounter on our spiritual journey. He need not disclose any further divine declarations. What we need to know has been made known. He holds the secret things and we hold His scriptures.

There are four great truths to glean from this text. First is the imparting of God’s revelation. God has revealed Himself to humanity. He has communicated with His creation. He is not a silent sovereign, ruling without revelation. He is personal and present in His proclamations to His people. His revelation of Himself is real and relevant. His care and compassion for His creation caused Him to communicate with them. He has disclosed His divine nature and declared His divine decrees. He has made Himself known (Rom 1:18-20).

Second, consider the importance of God’s revelation. What He has disclosed He has deemed essential for our earthly experience. The things that He has unveiled to us are intended to aid us in our spiritual advancement. They are indispensable instruments to inform us, instruct us, and inspire us. His revelation, although at times not specific to our situation, gives us clarity and counsel in crisis. His revelation strengthens our feeble knees and supports us when we stumble. His revelation is a lamp unto our feet and light unto our path (Ps 119:11). His revelation enables us to relate to Him and respond to Him. His revelation gives us hope in our hopelessness and help in our helplessness. (2 Tim 3:16-17)

Third, notice that we are to investigate God’s revelation. He has given us His word. It belongs to us. It is for us. The Creator of the universe has conversed with us. It is incumbent upon us to explore and examine what He has entrusted to us. We must discover its depths and discern its decrees. We must unravel His revelation. (2 Tim 2:15).

Finally, we must implement God’s Revelation. Investigation must lead to implementation. In examining what God has revealed to us we must respond in obedience to His ordinances. He clearly states in our text that the purpose of His revelation to us is “that we may follow all the words of the law”. All that He has divulged we are to do. We are to have the same response as that of King Josiah when the hidden word of God was rediscovered. He says, “Go, inquire of the LORD for me, and for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that has been found. For great is the wrath of the LORD that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not obeyed the words of this book, to do according to all that is written concerning us." (2 Kings 22:13). He knew that he must respond in obedience to God’s oracles. So must we.

The New Testament tells us that Jesus is the “mystery hidden in the ages and generations but now revealed to the saints” (Col 1:26). The writer of Hebrews says, “Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son. . . .” (Heb 1:1-2). Jesus is revealed to us that He might redeem us. As with all of that God has revealed, we must respond by receiving or rejecting Him.

Today Thank God that He has made himself known. Praise Him for the final revelation of His son sent to save us. Resolve to be like Josiah and investigate and implement what God has revealed in scripture. Commit to obey His oracles.
