Today's Bible Reading: JOHN 6:22-71; MARK 7:1-23; MATTHEW 15:1-20
John 6:35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.
We have all been hungry. And when we are, we seek to satisfy our hunger. We have all been thirsty and when we are, we seek to quench our thirst. When we are full, the hunger and thirst disappear. That is until the hunger and thirst reappears. This unending cycle of emptiness and filling continues throughout our life.
In a discussion Jesus had with some seekers, they recalled how God satisfied the hunger of the Israelites wondering in the wilderness. The Lord daily rained down manna. He met their needs. Jesus takes the opportunity to speak of a different kind of bread. He tells of eternally satisfying bread. It is the bread from heaven that doesn’t merely sustain life, but gives life. He proclaims Himself that bread. He declares that all who come to Him will never hunger. He says that those who believe in Him will never thirst.
He is where our hunger stops. Our famished souls are filled by Him. It is in Him we find our sustenance. He is our bread of life. No longer do we need the meager morsels that the world distributes. We have more joy than the pleasures of this life can provide. Our stomach is satisfied with the food of life and our souls are satisfied with Jesus, the bread of life. In Him we are more than satisfied. All that in this life that we have hungered and thirsted for, is now filled with His fullness. Never again will our soul experience that kind of intense hunger or unquenchable thirst. Our Savior is our soul’s deepest satisfaction.
Today thank Jesus for being the bread of life. Praise Him that He satisfies the hunger and trust of your soul. Thank Him that because of your relationship with Him, you will never hunger or thirst again.
